Let them wear shoes!!

Mat doesn’t wear shoes.

Mat doesn’t walk outside.  When he’s outside I carry him around either in my arms or in the Snugli.

So because of that Mat doesn’t wear shoes.  He wears really thick socks with these rubber grip things when he is indoors.

The only exception is at the daycare.

The daycare takes all the kids, regardless of age, outside for two hours a day every day.  And because carrying Mat is not fun, so they plop him down in the playground and he crawls along exploring bugs and eating gravel, like every other child out there.

So he needs shoes.

I have been leaving Mat’s shoes in the daycare.  Because I carry him to and from the car, I don’t ever take the shoes home.  They stay in the cubby always.

So imagine my surprise when Mat’s teacher told me that I had to bring in a pair of shoes for him because his socks were getting wet in the playground.  I had a mini freak out because someone had stolen my child’s shoes out of his cubby and my kid was now shoeless.  I was going to have to go show shopping in a mad panic, which isn’t fun and I was going to have to take a cranky baby and a hungry kindergartener with me.  That is not my ideal shopping excursion.

So I ran out to the cubby and looked in.

Guess what I found?

If you guessed his shoes, you get a bajillion cookies.

His shoes were in the cubby.  His shoes were always in the cubby.  They were in his cubby right next to his coat and his hat.

The teacher just wasn’t putting them on.

So the teacher and I had a conversation about how they should be putting Mat’s shoes on his feet every time he goes outside.  And every morning, I make sure to remind them that the shoes are in the cubby and that he should be wearing his shoes outdoors.

Because it’s not common sense or anything.
